Chapter 7

Before You Read

Who were the Mirabal sisters? Skim the following article for the answer to this question.
Women who were assassinated for their dedication to the resistance movement

.,.
Read

Separate the following words into smaller words or affixes (prefixes or suffixes). Then, use the clues to make up a working definition, a definition that is helpful but not perfectly written.

1- dictatorship
The suffix -ship talks about the quality, state, or form of something. A dictator is an absolute ruler who usually takes his position by force. A dictatorship is __.
a form of government by an absolute ruler

2- unheard of
The prefix un- means "not." The verb hear not only means "listen" but also "to be told of or informed of." So unheard of means __.
not known about beforehand

3- extraordinary
The prefix extra- means "outside" or "more than the usual." So extraordinary means __.
beyond the ordinary; unusual

4- injustice
Sometimes the prefix in- means "the opposite of" or "lacking." Injustice is __.
lack of justice; unfairness

5- resistance
The suffix -ance is used to form words that refer to an action or a series of actions. If resist means "to fight against something," then resistance is __.
the action of fighting against something

6- incarcerated
In Latin, the root carcer means "prison," so incarcerated means __.
put in prison

7- roadblock
If you block something, you stop it from moving or happening. Therefore a roadblock is probably used to __.
stop traffic

8- imprisonment
The prefix im- is a variation of the prefix in-meaning "in." The suffix -ment refers to an action, a process, or its result. Imprisonment probably means __.
the process of putting someone in prison

9- enrage
Rage is anger, and the prefix en- can mean "to become" or "to cause," so enrage means __.
to cause to become angry

Chapter 10

Before You Read

Write the main idea for each long, complex sentence.

1- The profiler tries to pin down information about a killer, such as gender, age, race, personality, whether he drives a nice car, and whether he is charming with the ladies, in order to draw a physical and psychological portrait of the killer.
Main idea:
The profiler tries to pin down information in order to draw a physical and psychological portrait of the killer.

2 Profilers analyze a set of clues: the evidence from the crime scene, repeated behaviors consistent over a number of crimes, and the killer's modus operandi-when, how, and who he killed-in order to come up with a profile.
Main idea:
Profilers analyze a set of clues in order to come up with a profile.

3- There are the basic requirements: you have to have been a Special Agent for, I think, three years, with a specialization in violent crimes and homicides; you should have excellent investigative skills and a degree, but the most important thing is to be imaginative and creative.
Main idea:
The most important thing is to be imaginative and creative.

4- Well, despite what television series like "Profiler" would have you believe, with its flashbacks and visions, profiling has nothing to do with being psychic.
Main idea:
Profiling has nothing to do with being psychic.

After You Read

Use the text to help answer these questions about the reading.

1- What does a profiler do?
A profiler uses all the information he or she can gatherto try to draw up a "profile" of a serial killer. The profile is a physical and psychological portrait that might include information such as gender, age, race, personality, etc. The profiler tries to look at patterns of behavior as well in order to link a suspect to a crime.

2- What kinds of people make good profilers?
Profilers must be Special Agents with good investigative skills and experience with homicide and violent cases. They should also be creative, good communicators, confident yet restrained, and have a good sense of humor.

3- How does Michael Reese approach a case?
He analyzes clues such as the evidence from the crime scene, repeated behaviors consistent over a number of crimes, and when, how, and who the killer killed. He also spends a lot of time looking at forensic evidence and how the criminal covered his tracks.

4- What does Michael Reese think might cause someone to be a killer?
He thinks a severely dysfunctional family life can make someone a killer, as well as the ignoring of early warning signs. He also thinks that brain damage or hormones could cause someone to be a serial killer.

5- What are the early warning signs of criminal behavior?
Bedwetting, arson, and cruelty to animals.

6- How does Michael Reese deal with having such a potentially difficult job?
He has a good sense of humor. He doesn't obsess about his job and makes sure to "turn off" at the end of the day.
