Lessons from the Farm "

I had never really lived on a farm , but my mother's Uncle John had a farm . So I spent time there ,like all the other children in the family. The farm was just a few miles from town, so we could ride our bicycles there . Aunt Wanda , my cousins , and the hired help all liked children . So we felt welcome there . Some very interesting things happened on that farm . I learned a lot about life and a lot about people there.


لم يسبق لي حقاً العيش في مزرعة , لكن عم أمي ( جون ) يملك مزرعةً. لذلك قضيت الوقت هناك, مثل كل الأطفال الآخرين في أسرتي . وكانت المزرعة على بعد أميال قليلة من المدينة, لذا يمكننا ركوب دراجاتنا إلى هناك . العمة ( واندا ) , وأبناء عمي [ أقربائي ] , والمساعدين المُسْتَأْجَرِين جميعهم يحبون الأطفال . لذا شعرنا بالترحيب هناك . بعض الأشياء المثيرة للاهتمام حدثت في تلك المزرعة. تعلمت الكثير عن الحياة والكثير عن الناس هناك.

I learned about having a job and motivation. As we grew older, we were asked if we wanted to work on the farm . One job that we all liked was picking beans . Uncle John planted several acres of green beans every spring , and in the middle of July , the beans were ready to begin picking .


تعلمت عن الحصول على عملٍ و حافز . كما تربينا في القِدَمْ,سُئِلنا إذا أردنا العمل في المزرعة. العمل الوحيد الذي كنا جميعاً نحبه هو " قطف الفاصوليا ". العم ( جون ) يزرع مساحات واسعة من الفاصوليا الخضراء كل فصل ربيع , و في وسط شهر ( جولاي - يونيو ), كانت الفاصوليا على استعدادٍ لبدء قطفها .


. He drove his yellow truck to town every morning and picked up his bean-pickers . He made two stops , one at the park and one closer to our house At seven in the morning , we children would be ready . we had our buckets and paper sacks with our lunches . We wore light - colored long -sleeved shirt . We had big straw hats , too , to protect our heads from the sun . We were off to earn money for special things that we wanted .



إنه يقود شاحنته الصفراء إلى المدينة كل صباح و يأخذ معه الفاصوليا المقطوفة . ويقف مرتين , مرة في الحديقة , ومرة أقرب إلى منزلنا . في الساعة السابعة صباحاً, نحن الأطفال نكون جاهزين. لدينا سلّاتنا وأكياس ورقية مع غدائنا. لبسنا قمصان طويلة الأكمام ذات ألوان فاتحة . كان لدينا قبعات من القش, أيضاً , لحماية رؤوسنا من الشمس . بإمكاننا كسب المال لشراء الأشياء الخاصة التي نريدها.


Picking beans was not hard work . Each person took one row , knelt on a folded burlap sack , and pushed back the leaves . We were supposed to pluck the long green beans and put them in our pails . When a bucket was full, We emptied the beans into big clean burlap sacks . We called these bags gunnysacks .



قطف الفاصوليا لم يكن عملاُ صعباً . كل شخص يأخذ صفاً واحداً, نركع على كيس من الخيش مطوية , وندفع بالأوراق إلى الخلف . كان من المفترض أن نقطف الفاصوليا الخضراء الطويلة ووضعها في دِلائنا . عندما يمتلئ الدلو, نفرّغ الفاصوليا في أكياس خيش كبيرة ونظيفة .نسمي هذه الأكياس بـ" قونية أو خيشة ".

A gunnysack could hold about 70 Pounds of beans . Most days , we children each picked one bag full . We got paid for this work .


Uncle John weighed the sacks at the end of the day . He deducted two Pounds for the weight of the sack . Aunt Wanda figured out how much we had earned and paid us three cents a Pound.



"القنية او الخيشة" يمكن أن تتحمل حوالي 70 رطل من الفاصوليا. معظم الأيام , كل طفل منّا يلتقط كيس واحد ممتلئ . ونحصل على المال من هذا العمل .

العم ( جون ) يزن الأكياس في نهاية اليوم .و يخصم رطلان من وزن الأكياس . العمة ( واندا ) تحسب كم كسبنا من المال و يُدْفَعُ لنا "3سنتات " لكل رطل .



Helen Miller was an adult who came with us sometimes.
Mrs.Miller always picked more then 100 pounds. Some days she picked more than 200 pounds of beans. she didn't play, however . My brothers always played , and they never got more than two dollars for the beans they picked . One day I chose a row next to Mrs.Miller's . Itried to work as fast as she did . That year I earned money for clothes and a gold wristwatch .



( هيلين ماير ) سيدة راشدة [ بالغة] فهي تأتي معنا في بعض الأحيان . السيدة (ميلر) دائماً تقطف أكثر من 100 رطل ((المقصود هنا أنها تقطف أكثر من 100 رطل من الفاصوليا)) . في بعض الأحيان هي تقطف أكثر من 200 رطل من الفاصوليا . هي لا تلعب,عموماً. أخواني دائماً يلعبون, ولا يحصلون على أكثر من دولارين " 2 دولار " للفاصوليا التي يقطفوها. في أحد الأيام اخترت صفّاً بجانب السيدة ( ميلر ) . حاولت العمل بأسرع مما فَعَلَتْ . في تلك السنة حصلت على مال لشراء ملابس وساعة يد ذهبية.




It was good to separate work and play . We earned money, and so did Uncle John . Every evening Uncle John took us back to twon . Then he took the the bags full of beans to a canning factory across the river.


من الجيد الفصل بين العمل واللعب. نحن كسبنا المال , وأيضاُ العم(جون) كذلك . في كل مساء العم ( جون ) يأخذنا إلى البلدة [ المدينة ] . ثم يأخذ الأكياس المليئة بالفاصوليا لمصنع التعليب مقابل النهر]أمام النهر[.



One very hot day , at lunchtime , I learned another lesson .
Uncle John suggested that we take a rest . The sun was simply too strong for us to stay in the fields at high noon . My cousin Peggy and I want for a walk . Everything seemed quiet as we walked into the cool shady woods . We found a grassy place under a tree , stretched out, and fell sound asleep .


في أحد الأيام الحارّة , في وقت الغداء , تعلمت درساً آخر . العم ( جون ) أقترح علينا أن نستريح . الشمس كانت ببساطة قوية جداً علينا للبقاء في الحقول فترة الظهر. قريبتي ( بيجي ) وأنا ذهبنا للمشي . كل شيء بدا هادئاً حتى دخلنا إلى الغابة الباردة ذات الظلال. وجدنا مكان عشبي تحت شجرة, تمددنـا , ونمنـا بعمق .



I Woke up suddenly . Someone was looking at me . I could feel eyes on me. I looked up and saw no one .I set up , and suddenly there was a great hullabaloo . Peggy woke up too , and we realized that a flock of 100 turkeys or more surrounded us . They wanted to be cool too . When we woke up , they were frightened . They were all raising their necks and gobble - gobbling at us . The din was terrifying



استيقظت فجأة . كان أحدهم ينظر إلي . شعرت بعيون تنظر باتجاهي . نظرت للأعلى ولم أجد أحداً. جلست , وفجأة كانت هناك ضوضاء عظيمة . ( بيجي ) استيقظت أيضاً, وتوضّح لنا أن هناك قطيع من 100 ديك رومي أو أكثر يحيط بنا. هم يريدون الإستبراد أيضاً. عندما استيقظنا , كانوا خائفين . كانوا جميعهم رافعين رقابهم ويصيحون- صياحاُ علينا . كان الضجيج مرعب.


Peggy started to cry . It was frightening , all those turkeys !
I don't know why , but I made a sound in response . I forced air out of my lungs and let my tongue make a flapping " R" sounds.



( بيجي ) بدأت بالبكى . لقد كان مخيفاً , كل هذا ديوك !
لا أعلم لماذا , ولكني أخرجت صوت استجابة. اضطررت إلى دفع هواء من رئتي وشكّلت لساني على هيئة حرف (الآر) ((يعني طوت لسانها على شكل حرف الآر)) وأخرجت صوت صفير



The turkeys suddenly all became quiet and settled down into the grass .
Peggy got to her feet , and so did I ! We needed to escape from all the turkeys . I continued making the whirring sound , and the turkeys stayed down . When I stopped , they started gobbling again .


الديوك الرومية فجأة أصبحت هادئة و استقرت على العشب. ( بيجي ) وصلت إلى قدميها , وهكذا فعلت أنا ! نريد الهروب من كل هذه الديوك. واصلت إصدار صوت الطنين , والديوك جالسة. عندما توقّفْت, بدؤوا بالصياح مره أخرى.


Later I learned that turkeys naturally fear hawks , and the whirring sound was like the sound of hawks' wings ! Peggy laughed about my knowing how to talk to turkeys . It was an insight into learning to speak foreign languages .There was one other important lesson that I learned on the farm .



بدؤوا بالصياح مره أخرى. بعدها تعلمت إن الديوك الرومية طبيعي تخاف من الصقور, وصوت الطنين يشبه صوت أجنحة الصقور! ( بيجي ) ضحكت على معرفتي كيفية التحدث مع الديوك. وكانت فكرة لتعلم لغة أجنبية.كان هناك درس آخر مهم تعلمته في المزرعة.



It was a warm Saturday morning in autumn . the fall colors were bright on the trees . My brother Ted and I had ridden our bicycles out to the farm to spend the day , We would help if we could .


لقد كان صباح سبتٍ دافئ في فصل الخريف. كانت ألوان الخريف مشرقه على الأشجار. أخي( تيد ) و أنـا كنا نقود دراجاتنا خارج المزرعة لقضاء اليوم . سوف نساعد لو استطعنا .


Suddenly , the sky grew dark , and the wind began to blow . It was obvious to us all that there was going to be a thunderstorm . Uncle John was leading his horses into the barn . He called to us to help get the animal into the barn . Ted and I took up the sticks.
We ran to the meadow and started to move the small hard of cows toward the barn . The cows went willingly into the safety of the large building .



فجأة , السماء بدأت تُظْلِم , والرياح بدأت تهب . و كان من الواضح لنا جميعاً أنها ستكون عاصفة رعدية . العم ( جون ) بدأ بتوجيه الخيول داخل إسطبل في الحظيرة . ونادانا للمساعدة في إدخال الحيوانات إلى الحظيرة. أنا و ( تيد ) تناولنا العُصِي ((يعني أخذنا العصي)) .
ركضنا للمرج وبدأنا بتحريك صغار البقر باتجاه الحظيرة. .البقرات ذهبن عن طيب خاطر [ راضيات ] إلى المبنى الكبير الآمن.




All the cows - except for a yearling , that is - went peacefully into the barn . This yong animal was stubbornly refusing to go in . Uncle John and Dan , his adult son , were both pulling on the rope around the calf's neck , and the animal's hooves were firmly planted in the earth ten feet from the door of the barn . Nothing , it seemed would get that animal into the barn .


كل البقرات – باستثناء اللي عمره حوالي عام ((يعني عجل صغير)), ذهب سلمياً ((يعني لم يرغب الذهاب بلطف)) إلى الحظيرة .هذا الحيوان الصغير كان يرفض بعناد للذهاب إلى الداخل. العم ( جون ) و ( دان ) , ابنه الكبير , كانوا يسحبوا الحبل من حول رقبة العجل, وحوافر الحيوان زرعت بقوة ((أو نقدر نقول:محفورة على نحوٍ قاسِ)) في الأرض على بُعْد عشرة أقدام من باب الحظيرة . لاشيء , على ما يبدو, سيجلب هذا الحيوان إلى داخل الحظيرة.



Ted watched and then asked , " Can I try ? Uncle John and Dan looked at him . Ted was only twelve years old . He was tall for his age, but he was certainly not as strong as Uncle John and Dan . Uncle John laughed and said , " OK , Teddy. Have a go at it ! " He threw the rope to Ted , who did not take it . Instead , Ted pulled hard on the tail of the calf , and the animal bolted straight into the barn . I learned that common sense is not common . I also learned that it is good to stop and think about something difficult to do . Sometimes it is better to use one's brain instead of one's brawn.
( تيد ) نظر ثم سأل , " هل استطيع أن أحاول؟" العم ( جون ) و ( دان ) نظروا إليه . ( تيد ) لدية من العمر 12 فقط . هو طويل بالنسبة لعمره, لكن هو بالتأكيد ليس قوياً مثل العم (جون) و( دان ) . العم ( جون ) ضحك وقال , " حسناً , تيدي .اذهب إليه !. " ورمى الحبل لـ( تيد), الذي لم يأخذها. بدلاً من ذلك , سحب ( تيد ) ذيل العجل بقوّة, والحيوان اندفع باستقامة باتجاه الحظيرة . تعلمت أن التصرف المعروف ليس صحيحاً دائماً.وأيضا تعلمت انه من الجيد الوقوف والتفكير بعمل شي صعب.أحياناً من الأفضل استعمال مره العقل بدلاً من القوة .
