Saudi Arabia : 25 February 2011

Saudi Arabia’s Minister of Labour Adel Fakieh recently announced that the Saudi government has plans for retail sector job creation.
Fakieh noted that a large amount of Saudis looking for work can be absorbed into the retail trade economic sector. The Minister opened the “Opportunities and Challenges in the Retail Sector” workshop and stated that many decisions will be announced soon to create a number of job openings for Saudis within this sector. Fakieh added that these decisions would be undertaken after the government had conferred with those who represent this booming private sector.
The minister stated that fewer Saudis leave positions within the retail environment due to the decent wages and advantageous benefits that are found there.
There is a government plan to link recruitment visa issuances to a business’s performance in the area of Saudization, according to the minister.
The level of unemployment seen within both male and female Saudis is a major challenge for the government.
Over one quarter of the government budget has been marked for training and education within the last few years. The allocation for 2011 sits at SR 150 billion, which constitutes 26 percent of the largest budget the Kingdom has ever seen. Total spending is expected to reach SR 580 billion.
The jobless rate for Saudis sits at about 10 percent based on recent estimates from the Ministry of Labour. The rate of joblessness among youth could be up to four times the rate seen among other age groups. The Kingdom’s native population totals 18.5 million with 47 percent of that number being 18 years of age or less
