They tend to de-emphasize what they set off الكلمات التى تقع بين القوسين تعتبر على صلة بالجملة الأساسية و لكنها غيى ضرورية ز و تضيف الأقواس إضافات أو تعبيرات لاتعتبر ضرورية للجملة و لكنها تعمل على زيادة التأكيد للجمل التى تضاف إليها . EXAMPLE: We visited several European countries (England, France, Spain) on our trip last year . Parentheses enclose figures within a sentence. تكتب الأرقام داخل الجملة بين الأقواس EXAMPLE: Grades will be based on (1) participation, (2) in-class writing, and (3) exams. When the group inside the parentheses forms a complete sentence but is inserted inside a larger sentence, no period is needed. DASHES الشرطتين Dashes connect groups of words to other groups of words in order to emphasize a point or show that the information is unessential. Usually the dash separates words in the middle of a sentence from the rest of he sentence, or it leads to material at the end of the sentence تربط الشرطتين مجموعة معينة من الكلمات بغيرها لكى تؤكد و جهة نظر أو توضح معلومة غير ضرورية . و عادة ما تفصل الشرطتين الكلمات فى منتصف الجملة عن باقى الجملة أو تقدم للمادة أو النتيجة فى نهاية الجملة In the middle of a sentence, a dash can put special emphasis on a group of words or make them stand out from the rest of the sentence فى منتصف الجملة يمكن أن تؤكد على مجموعة من الكلمات تأكيدا من نوع خاص أو تمييزها عن باقى الجملة EXAMPLE: Linda Simpson's pre******ion for the economy, lower interest rates, higher employment, and less government spending, was rejected by the president's administration. The dash can also be used to attach material to the end of a sentence when there is a clear break in the continuity of the sentence or when an explanation is being introduced يمكن أن تستخدم أيضا الشرطة لكى تربط كلمة معينة بنهاية الجملة و ذلك حينما يكون هناك انفصال كبير فى فى فكرة الجملة او جينما يتم تقديم شرح معين . EXAMPLE: The president will be unable to win enough votes for another term of office—unless , of course, he can reduce unemployment and the deficit soon. EXAMPLE: It was a close call—the sudden gust of wind pushed the helicopter to within inches of the power line. SEMICOLONS الفاصلة المنقوطة Semicolons are used to separate clauses or phrases that are related and that receive equal emphasis تستخدم الفاصلة المنقوطة لكى تفصل الجمل أو العبارات ( أشباه الجمل ) التى تكون على نفس الدرجة من الأهمية أو التأكيد . Semicolons join independent clauses in a compound sentence if no coordinating conjunction is used. تربط الفاصلة المنقوطة الجمل الرئيسية فى الجمل المركبة إن لم يستخدم رابط من روابط الجمل المركبة EXAMPLE: Michael seemed preoccupied; he answered our questions abruptly. Semicolons are used before a conjunctive adverb (transition word) that joins the clauses of a compound sentence الفاصلة المنقوطة تستخدم قبل الظرف الرابط ( الكلمات الانتقالية ) التى تربط بين جمل الجملة المركبة . EXAMPLE: The emergency room was crowded; however, Warren was helped immediately. Semicolons help avoid confusion in lists where there are already commas تعمل الفاصلة المنقوطة على تجنب استخدام الفاصلةcomma فى بعض الاحيان . EXAMPLE: We traveled to London, England; Paris, France; Berlin, Germany; and Sofia, Bulgaria. COLONS النقطتان العموديتان Colons follow independent clauses and are used to call attention to the information that comes after تتبع النقطتان الجمل الرئيسية التى تستخدم لاسترعاء الانتباه للمعلومات التى تأتى بعدها . Colons come after the independent clause and before the word, phrase, sentence, quotation, or list it is introducing تستخدم أيا من النقطتان العموديتان قبل الجمل الرئيسية و التى يأتى بعدها بعض الكلمات أو العبارات أة الجمل التى تقدم لها هذه الجملة الرئيسية EXAMPLE: Joe has only one thing on his mind: girls. (word) Joe has only one thing on his mind: the girl next door. (phrase) Joe has only one thing on his mind: he wants to go out with Linda. (clause) Joe has several things on his mind: his finals, his job, and Linda. (list) Never use a colon after a verb that directly introduces a list. INCORRECT: The things on Joe’s mind are: finals, work, and Linda. CORRECT: The things on Joe’s mind are finals, work, and Linda. HYPHENS الوصلة أو الشرطة الواصلة Hyphens are used to form compound words or join word units. They are used to join prefixes, suffixes and letters to words تستخدم الشرطة الواصلة لتكوين الكلمات المركبة أو وحدات الكلمات المركبة و تستخدم أيضا لتربط بين السوابق و اللواحق و الحروف من جهة و الكلمات من جهة أخرى Use hyphens with compound numbers from twenty-one to ninety-nine and with fractions used as modifiers استخدم الشرطة الواصلة مع الأعداد المركبة ابتداء من 21 و حتى 99 و مع الكسور . I need to check their spelling . 3) some verbs can be followed by (a gerund and infinitive) For example ( like – love – hate – prefer ) I like talking on the phone . I like to talk on the phone. Is the internet good or bad? There is currently a lot of debate surrounding thetopic of the internet. On one hand, many people feel that the internet is havinga negative impact on our society. Their reasons include topics such as cybersafety or more specifically; pornographic sites, piracy, fraud and other nastystuff. Many of these people feel that the use of the internet should be highlyrestricted in order to ensure the safety of the general public. Others arguethat how and why the public uses the internet should be left up to theindividual in question to decide. Research is the most common way thatthe internet is used and it has become one of the biggest sources for research. Students from all different grades of schooling are among the top people who areusing the internet for research. In fact, nowadays, it is almost required thatstudents use the Internet for school research. The Internet is so commonly usedfor research because of its limitless information. It is amazing how muchinformation one has right at their fingertips. On the flip side, theaccessibility to so much information can have disadvantages. Students using theInternet can easily be lured into dangerous activities such as pornography. Whether surfing the web, reading newsgroups or using e-mail youth are at risk ofbeing exposed to extremely inappropriate material. Another way theinternet is being used is through online business (e-commerce and e-banking) transactions. One example of e-business is online shopping. This makes life easyfor the individual as he or she does not have to leave and can pretty muchpurchase what ever they want right from their own home. Online shopping has alsobrought many companies a lot of money as millions of dollars are spent everyyear by consumers who are shopping online. For financial institutions it hasmade the transfer of money easier, convenient, faster and safer. The negativeeffect of online transactions and business activities is that the informationattached to these transactions can fall into the hands of the wrong people. Issues of theft and privacy are important to consider when thinking about doingany type of online activity that requests personal information. This is one ofthe privacy violations that can take place and it definitely has manypotentially devastating financial consequences. Entertainment is one ofthe most popular reasons to surf the net. Downloading games, music, visitingchat rooms, reading the news and finding out about current sport’s scores aresome of the common uses. Chat rooms are popular because users can easily meetnew and interesting people. The Internet has actually been used by people tofind life long partners! Although there are a lot of positive relationships anddiscussion groups developed through the internet there are also a lot of issuesrelated to privacy. Electronic messages sent over the net can be easily snoopedand tracked, revealing who is talking to whom and what they are talking about. It is very easy for strangers to gather information about you so it isimperative that you are careful and aware at all times. When downloading onthe net, viruses might be downloaded with as well. Though viruses can bereceived through other means like the use of floppy, a major source is theinternet. Today computers are getting viruses that can destroy the computer’sentire hard drive. A lot of people are not properly educated about such virusesand what actions they can take in order to be proactive against them. All of the issues that I have discussed can be researched in order todecrease, if not eradicate, the dangers of using the internet. The more aware weare of all the risks we face by using the internet the more we can make surethat we are taking all the necessary cautions. Preventive measures in relationto the internet need to be more fully researched and acted upon by teachers, parents and by the youth using the internet. Better monitoring and supervisionby adults needs to be implicated. Providing individuals with the necessarycounsel needs to start happening. Things like the fact that when giving personalinformation over the internet people should make sure the web site is protectedwith a recognizable security symbol. Then again it is also important that oneunderstands that they are never fully protected because anyone may obtain auser’s information if they know enough about computers. Whether theinternet is bad or good or whether it should be used or not should be determinedby the individual in question. It is important that we bear in mind that theongoing globalization will not be possible without the internet.
