He is one of the Earth's oldest creature , and long periods of history have passed before his small sharp eyes . He was present to greet the arrival of the dinosaurs nearly 200 million years ago . And he was there to bid them goodbye more than 100 million years later . He was there long ago before human beings came on the scene .
We are speaking of the lowly cockroach . The cockroach has learnt more about survival than any other creature . He has some extraordinary attributes . He con live anywhere , from the middle of the sahara desert to the kitchen in freezing labrador . Cockroach have been found , comfortably housed in cash registers and market scales , radio and TV sets , refrigerators and cupboards . There are 3500 known species of cockroach and only one percent of these seems to like living in human dwellings . Some live in borrows of ground squirrels . Others prefer the forest .
Because of their ability to survive and their rapid preeding , cockroaches are used in cancer and heart disease research . Many species eat dead vegetation that would otherwise fill up the forest .
Many of us prefer not to have him around . But our chances of getting rid of him are very small . New cockroach-killers keep pouring out of research laboratories . They work at first . But with time , the cockroach learns to live with them - as he has learned to live with everything else . The best weapon that house-owners have against cockroaches is perfect cleanliness .
Many insects teach us good values . Ants teach us planning , bees tell us about the virtues of hard work , grasshoppers sing about the pure joy of living . The cockroach ? Nothing except that living quietly and minding one's own business makes you live 350 million years !
