John Dryden was a dramatist, a poet and a critic. He is considered the founder of the prose style because he wrote many prose articles. He wrote criticism. He wrote about literature about the rules of writing poetic drama.
His most interesting critical work is his *An Essay on Dramatic Poesy*
In the first part of his essay, he gives us his aim why he intended to writer about dramatic poetry.
He said that his aim in writing this essay was to vindicate= defend by arguing, giving reason= justifying. His aim is to vindicate the honor of the English writers.
He gives reasons. By giving reasons he is justifying, defending his ideas. By justifying he is setting the rules. He had wider aim that is to give us the, principles rules that guide the writers, how would writers write their work of art.
He was defending against certain attack, certain accusation.
When he found that literature was tackled at his time, he started defending it. The kind of poetry that was tackled was dramatic poetry= poetry that is used in drama- many of his ideas he is tackling are based on Aristotle.
Because he was man of letters, the way he wrote this essay is very artistic. He wrote it in an artistic form. He borrowed this form from the classics. The whole essay is written in the form of argument. He imagines that there were four friends. They were going on as trip in as a boat in the Thames- an English river. The boat is something symbolic; A symbol of life. He was imaging that those friends were on the boat in the river. They are all arguing about certain point- poetry. Through the four friends we are given four different points of views. At that time there was an event= a battle between the English and the Dutch. He used this occasion to imagine that there were four friends and that they were trying to move from one place to another. They took a small boat. They were sailing in the Thames= an English river. While they were sitting in the boat, they were talking about many things. One of them mentions poetry. The four of them had different views. One of them is giving us the classical point of view, he prefers the classical writers and he says why. The other says that the French is better and he says why. The third says that the modern English drama is better and he says why. The fourth represents Dryden himself. He tells us his point of view.

Background on John Dryden

John Dryden was a man of various trades and influenced the opinions of many during the Restoration. He was a poet, a playwright, a critic, and a translator of foreign works to English. Dryden was a prominent write from the time he was twenty-nine years old to the time of his death, at seventy-nine years (1660-1700). Many of his works were centered on politics Dryden wrote about a dozen poems in the first decade of his literary career.

He presented an argument, supporting evidence, and convinced the readers to agree with him by using analogies and metaphors. (Anderson 459) Dryden set standards in poetry and many, including Alexander Pope, modeled their poetry after his. After 1680, Dryden changed the face of British poetry; he popularized a new style called verse satires. To fill the financial gaps, Dryden turned to writing plays for local theaters, where they became quite popular. Dryden's poetry did not support his lifestyle and his household (a wife and three sons). He "perfect[ed] the technique of English poetry, regularize[d] meter, and [made] diction precise". Ultimately, he would be stripped of both titles in 1688, because he converted to Catholicism in 1685. asional", written for special events and occasions, including Astraea Redux, celebrating the restoration of King Charles II to the English throne in 1660, and Annus Mirabilis, in which he praised King Charles' actions during the war between England and Holland and the Great Fire of London. In the beginning he wrote heroic tragedies, but comedy and drama were also popular themes of his. Despite the popularity of his plays during the Restoration, few have been performed posthumously. (Anderson 458) Dryden used poetry to express his opinions on the government of England. These poems were so highly praised by the government that, in 1668, Dryden was named Poet Laureate and Historiographer Royal in 1670. The EncyclopAdia Britannica goes so far to say that he was the greatest English verse satirist to that point.

Stephen Gossen makes charges on poetry which Sidney answers.
The charges are:
1. Poetry is the waste of time.
2. Poetry is mother of lies.
3. It is nurse of abuse.
3. Plato had rightly banished the poets from his ideal world.

Against these charges, Sidney has answered them in the following ways-
Poetry is the source of knowledge and a civilizing force, for Sidney. Gossoon attacks on poetry saying that it corrupts the people and it is the waste of time, but Sidney says that no learning is so good as that which teaches and moves to virtue and that nothing can both teach and amuse so much as poetry does. In essay societies, poetry was the main source of education. He remembers ancient Greek society that respected poets. The poets are always to be looked up. So, poetry is not wasted of time.

To the second charge, Sidney answers that poet does not lie because he never affirms that his fiction is true and can never lie. The poetic truths are ideal and universal. Therefore, poetry cannot be a mother of lies.
Sidney rejects that poetry is the source of abuses. To him, it is people who abuses poetry, not the vice- versa. Abuses are more nursed by philosophy and history than by poetry, by describing battles, bloodshed, violence etc. On the contrary, poetry helps to maintain morality and peace by avoiding such violence and bloodsheds. Moreover it brings light to knowledge.
Sidney views that Plato in his Republic wanted to banish the abuse of poetry not the poets. He himself was not free from poeticality, which we can find in his dialogues. Plato never says that all poets should be banished. He called for banishing only those poets who are inferior and unable to instruct the children.
For Sidney, art is the imitation of nature but it is not slavish imitation as Plato views. Rather it is creative imitation. Nature is dull, incomplete and ugly. It is artists who turn dull nature in to golden color. He employs his creative faculty, imagination and style of presentation to decorate the raw materials of nature. For Sidney, art is a speaking picture having spatiotemporal dimension. For Aristotle human action is more important but for Sidney nature is important.
Artists are to create arts considering the level of readers. The only purpose of art is to teach and delight like the whole tendency of Renaissance. Sidney favors poetic justice that is possible in poet's world where good are rewarded and wicked people are punished.
Plato's philosophy on ' virtue' is worthless at the battlefield but poet teaches men how to behave under all circumstances. Moral philosophy teaches virtues through abstract examples and history teaches virtues through concrete examples but both are defective. Poetry teaches virtue by example as well as by percept (blend of abstract + concrete). The poet creates his own world where he gives only the inspiring things and thus poetry holds its superior position to that of philosophy and history.
In the poet's golden world, heroes are ideally presented and evils are corrupt. Didactic effect of a poem depends up on the poet's power to move. It depends up on the affective quality of poetry. Among the different forms of poetry like lyric, elegy, satire, comedy etc. epic is the best form as it portrays heroic deeds and inspires heroic deeds and inspires people to become courageous and patriotic.
In this way, Sidney defines all the charges against poetry and stands for the sake of universal and timeless quality of poetry making us know why the poets are universal genius.

ممكن احتمال سؤال يجي compare between neader's tragic-comedy and lisideius's tragic- comedy

ايش حله :bawling::bawling:

, Lisideius attacks the idea of tragic comedy and says that it is absurd; no one in the world has something as absurd as the tragic comedy. He says how can we bring fools and kings together because in the end it won’t be a tragedy or a comedy. Everything he says will be counter replied or defended by Neander; Neander will say that the tragic comedy is an honor to the English.

neadersay'sthat the French have imitated by combining the serious with the comical: tragicomedy. He says you have attacked us for using tragicomedy and you said that it is absurd, but the French writers have begun to imitate the English writers. He gives us the name of prominent writers such as Moliere to show us that French writers have begun to imitate the genre of tragicomedy, therefore it is not absurd. He is going to give us more points showing thus why a tragicomedy should be used in drama.

then, He is going to justify the use of tragicomedy. 1- He says that when we put opposites they show each other clear. In other words, when we put two opposites together they show the qualities or the characteristics of the thing they’re being put next to. This applies to drama because if I want to show something that is very serious I bring with it comedy. The comedy will bring out the tragic elements, and the tragic elements will bring out the comical effect. He uses the word contraries. 2- When we are in a tragedy the audience needs to be relieved a little bit. One way of doing that is by adding music, another way is by adding comical scenes; it relieves the audience from being two tense while watching the play. What Neander says here is that we need the comical element in order to provide relief. 3- He does not believe that compassion, sympathy and mirth (laughter) destroy each other:

The honor is that they have invented the genre of tragicomedy. Neander shows not just that it is not absurd and there is logic behind it, he gives the honor to the English for having contributed with the genre of tragicomedy.

Plato's Theory of Inspiration

Ion

The text is written in the form of an argumentative dialogue between Socrates and Ion. As a teacher, Plato used different methods of explaining and teaching in this text to make his idea reach the readers and students. He chooses the
argumentative method where he makes use of questions and answers

.
What is poetry?

poetry is the outcome of a divine inspiration not following any rules of art.

Theory of Inspiration
:
The god of poetry sent his divine inspiration to the poet through muse. [They have nine muses at that time which are the muses of arts]. Then inspiration goes to the poet through the muse. [God – Muse – Poet]. In order to receive inspiration, the poet has to go to the fountain of honey and become unconscious. So, at that time, when the poets receive inspiration, they are out of their minds and in such a state, they are like mad people. While they receive inspiration, they became unconscious and mad but after that they return to be ordinary people again. So, they are not mad all the time or totally mad but they are half-mad.
When the inspiration reached the poets from god, they come to know the poem that they are suppose to recite. This poem is ready made and considered the words of god. So, the poet is like a prophet and the messenger of god who carries god’s words. Only when he recites his poetry, he becomes a prophet and then he returned to be an ordinary man again. So, the poet is half-prophet.
According to Plato, the poet is half-mad and half-prophet.

After receiving the inspiration and get the words of poetry, the poet started to recite the poem. Then, he has some people who affected by his poetry and become his followers and those people are called the Rhapsodes.

Chain of Inspiration: or power of magnetic

- God is like a magnetic stone that attract iron objects and magnetize them and then they attracted to each other. So, the magnet property partly transferred to the iron objects and let these objects attract other things.
- The same chain applied in poetry as;

So, God, muse, poet, rhapsode and the audience are all connected to each other by inspiration.

"The Republic" by Plato (The theory of imitation)

poetry is an imitation of an imitation of the real truth.Poetry is Thrice removed
from truth .God-maker-imitator

, Is this an argument? No
because we have only one point of view given to us from Plato's point
of view. Although he is using argumentative style of questioning and answering, but he is not using the proper argumentative methods, he is
not applying, he is just making use of it to prove his own point of view

Plato gives an example of the bed and the table. Any bed or table starts by an original idea that comes at a person who starts giving a shape to the idea in his mind. Of course there are so many shapes but the original idea is something made of any material for someone to sleep on. At the beginning they made it of stone then it was developed using straw, wood, metal …

But the idea of having something raised from the ground for a person to sleep on is the original idea of the bed that was sent by a god to a man who started to give it a form.

For art they thought the muse didn't carry only the ideas but what beyond them, the words the colors in painting. This is what we call god and maker.

Which poetry Plato didn't banish from his Republic?

Poetry has a strong effect on people and it is affecting the majority not only the simple minded people. He said at the very end that he is not against poetry as poetry but he is against the effect of poetry on people.
Having a powerful effect is not only made by love poetry but it is made by all kinds of poetry. There was another kind of poetry at that time called the religious or divine poetry that was glorifying deeds of the gods and goddesses. He didn't banish that kind of poetry from his Republic.

He said that most of the people could not understand correctly, so why would we have it for the minority? It's better to banish it. So he was against poetry because of its power, because he himself was a poet and turned to be a philosopher.

**
He speaks about the rational principle of the soul:

1- the superior part is the mind, the reason and 2- the inferior part is heart and emotions and what part is poetry addressing at the end? It is addressing the inferior part of the soul. They are far removed from reality, they don't have a name and they don't teach.

**
Why poetry should be banished from Plato's ideal society or Republic?
1- Plato considered all arts are only imitating appearance not reality and they are three times away from reality. Because of that, poetry should be banished from his ideal society.

2- Plato thinks that the user is more beneficial than the artist. We have 1- god, 2- the maker, 3- the user, and 4- the artist from the point of view of the utility; that's why this was the second reason he banished poetry from his Republic.

3- Even when the audience receives poetry, the mind is unconscious. So it is addressing the inferior part of the soul, so the outcome will be more inferior. He said it is like an inferior marrying an inferior, so the children will be more inferior. This is another reason for banishing poetry from ideal society.

4- Poetry as Plato sees is full of lies because it's only imitation of appearance. This means that the poet is lying and because it's full of lies, so we cannot accept it in ideal society.

stephen gossen makes charges on poetry which sidney answers.
the charges are:

GOOD JOB!

Unfortunately, many of you still don't know your numbers. You need to write your number on the final or you will lose a mark. I will provide a list of names with the numbers on the day of the final-make sure you write your number on your test paper. If you do not know your grade and would like to know it, I will try to respond to requests from group leaders.
For those of you have not taken the mid-term and I accepted your medical excuse, the make-up will be after the final. Please contact me for details.
For those of you who had a complete attendance, one bonus mark was added.

Now, a few remarks:

Make sure you begin your sentences with CAPITAL letters.

Make sure you don't use adjectives for nouns and nouns for adjectives.
Eg.
This place was full of joy, happiness, and 'innocent'.
Innocent---innocence

The house is full of 'silent'
Either say a 'silent house' or 'silence' fills the house.

Be careful not to confuse between homophones:
Their/there

Use the present simple.

Some students forgot to write the 'why part'. Don't forget to write about ALL the three parts: WHAT, HOW, and WHY.
In the why part don't explain. Simply give your reasons why you think the poet wrote this poem. What does he want to say to the world. What is his world-view? What is your personal response to the poem etc.

Don't repeat yourself.Don't repeat yourself.Don't repeat yourself :)
The theme should not be a repetition of the summary:
Eg.
Summary: In the Open Window the speaker speaks about an old, silent house surrounded y no one and that man lives in isolation.
Theme: Is about a man who lives in an old house who lives in isolation and is eager to live among people.

In this case:
1.The student has just repeated herself.
2. She shouldn't have mentioned isolation in the summary.
3. In the theme, she should have concentrated simply on the idea of isolation without needing to repeat the description of the man and the house.

Example 2:
This student wrote:
Theme: "This poem talks about a lonely child who doesn't have any friends."
That is a SUMMARY and NOT a theme. She should have written:
"The poem explores the theme of loneliness ....."

Example 3:
Student: "The poem is about someone he misses."
Correction: When you write the theme, remember you're not going to mention the people/animals/ objects etc. but the IDEAS or FEELINGS the poet is trying to express. She should have written:
"The poem is about the pain involved in missing loved ones."
Or
"The poem is about the sadness created by losing loved ones."
In this way we have given emphasis to 'pain' and 'sadness' rather than 'someone'.

Pay attention to the poet's name! Many of you wrote Wordsworth instead of Henry Wadsforth Longfellow. Either use the full name or just the last name.

Some of you such as Afnan Al-Dahsh, Fawzia Al-Malki, Iman Al-Mudarae,Ghada Al-Haboob, Dalal A Al-Qahtani, Lamia Al-Tolyan, Sarah Al-Tamimi and many others, write very neatly and beautifully. I would like to sincerely thank all of you who tried to be as neat as possible. THANK YOU!

Others have made the process of checking extremely difficult and time-consuming!

Please stick to the space provided. If you write too much, it means you don't know the exact answer and are simply writing everything you know. Writing everything you know makes you lose marks because it shows you have memorized (the tape-recorded lectures) rather than understand the subject and hence are unable to figure out what is required.

Also, if I provide 3 lines please don't make those 3 into 9 tiny microscopic lines by dividing them and writing in tiny illegible handwriting.
If you start writing with a pencil, make sure you erase the writing afterwards. It is very impolite and inconsiderate to force the reader to make out what you have written. On the final, if I can not read it, it's your loss.

Please study well. I hope to see well written ORIGINAL answers from all of you. The final will consist of three parts:

Part 1 Practical criticism (unseen)

http://www.ckfu.org/vb/t93463-366.html
