It was good to separate work and play . We earned money, and so did Uncle John . Every evening Uncle John took us back to twon . Then he took the the bags full of beans to a canning factory across the river. من الجيد الفصل بين العمل واللعب. نحن كسبنا المال , وأيضاُ العم(جون) كذلك . في كل مساء العم ( جون ) يأخذنا إلى البلدة [ المدينة ] . ثم يأخذ الأكياس المليئة بالفاصوليا لمصنع التعليب مقابل النهر]أمام النهر[. |

One very hot day , at lunchtime , I learned another lesson . Uncle John suggested that we take a rest . The sun was simply too strong for us to stay in the fields at high noon . My cousin Peggy and I want for a walk . Everything seemed quiet as we walked into the cool shady woods . We found a grassy place under a tree , stretched out, and fell sound asleep . في أحد الأيام الحارّة , في وقت الغداء , تعلمت درساً آخر . العم ( جون ) أقترح علينا أن نستريح . الشمس كانت ببساطة قوية جداً علينا للبقاء في الحقول فترة الظهر. قريبتي ( بيجي ) وأنا ذهبنا للمشي . كل شيء بدا هادئاً حتى دخلنا إلى الغابة الباردة ذات الظلال. وجدنا مكان عشبي تحت شجرة, تمددنـا , ونمنـا بعمق . |

I Woke up suddenly . Someone was looking at me . I could feel eyes on me. I looked up and saw no one .I set up , and suddenly there was a great hullabaloo . Peggy woke up too , and we realized that a flock of 100 turkeys or more surrounded us . They wanted to be cool too . When we woke up , they were frightened . They were all raising their necks and gobble - gobbling at us . The din was terrifying استيقظت فجأة . كان أحدهم ينظر إلي . شعرت بعيون تنظر باتجاهي . نظرت للأعلى ولم أجد أحداً. جلست , وفجأة كانت هناك ضوضاء عظيمة . ( بيجي ) استيقظت أيضاً, وتوضّح لنا أن هناك قطيع من 100 ديك رومي أو أكثر يحيط بنا. هم يريدون الإستبراد أيضاً. عندما استيقظنا , كانوا خائفين . كانوا جميعهم رافعين رقابهم ويصيحون- صياحاُ علينا . كان الضجيج مرعب. |

Peggy started to cry . It was frightening , all those turkeys ! I don't know why , but I made a sound in response . I forced air out of my lungs and let my tongue make a flapping " R" sounds. ( بيجي ) بدأت بالبكى . لقد كان مخيفاً , كل هذا ديوك ! لا أعلم لماذا , ولكني أخرجت صوت استجابة. اضطررت إلى دفع هواء من رئتي وشكّلت لساني على هيئة حرف (الآر) ((يعني طوت لسانها على شكل حرف الآر)) وأخرجت صوت صفير. |

The turkeys suddenly all became quiet and settled down into the grass . Peggy got to her feet , and so did I ! We needed to escape from all the turkeys . I continued making the whirring sound , and the turkeys stayed down . When I stopped , they started gobbling again . الديوك الرومية فجأة أصبحت هادئة و استقرت على العشب. ( بيجي ) وصلت إلى قدميها , وهكذا فعلت أنا ! نريد الهروب من كل هذه الديوك. واصلت إصدار صوت الطنين , والديوك جالسة. عندما توقّفْت, بدؤوا بالصياح مره أخرى. |

Later I learned that turkeys naturally fear hawks , and the whirring sound was like the sound of hawks' wings ! Peggy laughed about my knowing how to talk to turkeys . It was an insight into learning to speak foreign languages .There was one other important lesson that I learned on the farm . بدؤوا بالصياح مره أخرى. بعدها تعلمت إن الديوك الرومية طبيعي تخاف من الصقور, وصوت الطنين يشبه صوت أجنحة الصقور! ( بيجي ) ضحكت على معرفتي كيفية التحدث مع الديوك. وكانت فكرة لتعلم لغة أجنبية.كان هناك درس آخر مهم تعلمته في المزرعة. |

It was a warm Saturday morning in autumn . the fall colors were bright on the trees . My brother Ted and I had ridden our bicycles out to the farm to spend the day , We would help if we could . لقد كان صباح سبتٍ دافئ في فصل الخريف. كانت ألوان الخريف مشرقه على الأشجار. أخي( تيد ) و أنـا كنا نقود دراجاتنا خارج المزرعة لقضاء اليوم . سوف نساعد لو استطعنا . |

Suddenly , the sky grew dark , and the wind began to blow . It was obvious to us all that there was going to be a thunderstorm . Uncle John was leading his horses into the barn . He called to us to help get the animal into the barn . Ted and I took up the sticks. We ran to the meadow and started to move the small hard of cows toward the barn . The cows went willingly into the safety of the large building . فجأة , السماء بدأت تُظْلِم , والرياح بدأت تهب . و كان من الواضح لنا جميعاً أنها ستكون عاصفة رعدية . العم ( جون ) بدأ بتوجيه الخيول داخل إسطبل في الحظيرة . ونادانا للمساعدة في إدخال الحيوانات إلى الحظيرة. أنا و ( تيد ) تناولنا العُصِي ((يعني أخذنا العصي)) . ركضنا للمرج وبدأنا بتحريك صغار البقر باتجاه الحظيرة. .البقرات ذهبن عن طيب خاطر [ راضيات ] إلى المبنى الكبير الآمن. |

All the cows - except for a yearling , that is - went peacefully into the barn . This young animal was stubbornly refusing to go in . Uncle John and Dan , his adult son , were both pulling on the rope around the calf's neck , and the animal's hooves were firmly planted in the earth ten feet from the door of the barn . Nothing , it seemed would get that animal into the barn . كل البقرات – باستثناء اللي عمره حوالي عام ((يعني عجل صغير)), ذهب سلمياً ((يعني لم يرغب الذهاب بلطف)) إلى الحظيرة .هذا الحيوان الصغير كان يرفض بعناد للذهاب إلى الداخل. العم ( جون ) و ( دان ) , ابنه الكبير , كانوا يسحبوا الحبل من حول رقبة العجل, وحوافر الحيوان زرعت بقوة ((أو نقدر نقول:محفورة على نحوٍ قاسِ)) في الأرض على بُعْد عشرة أقدام من باب الحظيرة . لاشيء , على ما يبدو, سيجلب هذا الحيوان إلى داخل الحظيرة. |
